User Communication

We currently have our channel on Undernet and for the most part it is working fine. We will be registering it soon (have to wait 3 more days), however there have been alot of complaints about spambots, and the lack of nickserv, so I have made a test IRC server that seems to be working well. We have moved once already from freenode, and I know it is a bit of a pain, so I am asking the community, would you prefer to stay on undernet or how our own IRC network. If we do our own network, it of course won't be restricted to the Okopipi project, you would be free to create your own channels for your personal use, and hopefully we could host other open source projects there. The biggest problem is DoS there will be a centeral point of attack and the IRC server could be taken out, but its just IRC, one of many places the users have to communicate with each other so really it wouldn't be a big deal to loose an IRC server for a day or two, and if worst comes to worst we could go back to Undernet. please place your votes and comments about this issue, also if you would rather use another protocol, such as silc please say so.

I think the added control

I think the added control will be a good idea to keep spammers and users from harassing other users. DDOSs will happen, it's a fact of life but the IRC channel is really not something critical to the operating of the project and it wouldn't be hard to roll over to another network in the case of an emergency.

Have we experienced that yet?

Have we experienced harassment yet though?

And why use a network that we'll have to move off of once there's a DOS attack? Personally I'd just rather stick with one of the larger networks and not have it worry. There's things on them that get a lot worse of a response (attack wise) then we'd be getting.

Well to be honest neither

Well to be honest to my knowlege we have experienced neither (DDOS or Harassment) but both can happen. I certainly see your point but personally I think the risk of DDOS attack on a IRC server is a bit overplayed here. The channel is just a chat channel it is far more likely they would focus attacks on servers such as this one that provide official news. Regardless I do see the spammers going after specific users in the group, in hosting the server our host info etc can be hidden and access to that data will be limited to people we trust.

Stick with a major network

Those are the guys who are experienced at handling DOS attacks, because they most likely have to put up with them every day. There's no sense in creating a server which will buckle under a DOS attack and may actually be vulnerable to hacks which the larger networks aren't vulnerable to.

Also, why go to the trouble of creating an entire server for one IRC channel? If everyone wants nickserv, then go to dal.net

Having our own server

Having our own server (network?) will give us a lot more control over how we do stuff and, as has been stated, IRC is not an essential service, we could live without it (and/or fall back to undernet)

unnecessary to move

Whats this whining about nickserv and all the other services. People need to grow up. Keep the server on undernet itself instead of starting another ircD.

Soon they will ask for a back rub. Its time you put your foot down and hold the channel instead of moving again.

If we move to another

If we move to another server, we should keep a bot on Undernet to redirect others to the new place and to keep it to ourselves as a backup.
