Need programers

Due to real life some of our programers are not able to start coding right now, so we are in desprate need of more programmers. Please let me know if you are willing to help. If you havn't emailed me and are intrested please do so.

The language issue

I would think portability and cross-platform availability should rule the decision of which language to use.

I just reviewed the forums, and I'm hoping this project continues to grow - it's been slow - that should hasten the decision to select a language platform.

Once that's decided, perhaps those available will be more apt to get involved.

the language issue

Well I haveto agree with Forrie on this and I dont see what the hold up is to make this descision once decided and sealed in Blood, then its as Oat Willy would say "onward through the Fog" somebody just pick one then fire ,get it started, so folks get a sence of direction instead of milling about smartly .lord youd think this thing being driven by a bunch of Spammers :):)

dealing with reality

I disappeared for awhile (moving to a new country, in fact), so I know how that works.

Maybe we should reevaluate the implementation language, etc., and base our decisions on who will *actually* be available to program. For example, the votes for C++ outweighed the Java votes, and there were some valid arguments for that... but in the end, if there isn't a single C++ programmer who can dedicate time to the project, we need to vote again.

Personally, I can donate bits here and there -- but my experience is in Java, not C++.

I agree. If there are Java

I agree. If there are Java programmers available, then the first implementation of Okopipi should be done in Java. Then, when C/C++/[insert language of choice here] programmers become available, implementations of Okopipi can be produced with those languages.

It's okay if it's not perfect at first, everyone. We just need to get something out of the door ASAP. Is there even a version control server set up yet?

I think not, in three cases.

1. Is there a version control server? I think not.
2. Are there no C/C++ programmers? I think not. I code C. Problem is, Winsock is a pain in the viagra-hole.
3. Should we use Java? I think not. Good point though, we may have to use it for now. But PLEASE precompile it if you use Java: it's NOT very standard.

re:I think not, in three cases.

Well, there is a VCS set up over at svn.okopipi.org it's just sitting there waiting for anyone who wants access. Just shoot me an email to nathanclayton@gmail.com.

As to the language question - I'm not a programmer and I'm not going to mandate what people use for the language. I think that at the moment it's pretty much whoever writes me first and asks for access gets to choose the language, be it C/C++/Java/Python/Ruby/whatever.

I think maybe you should

I think maybe you should give access to the post below and upload his source.

No Coder shortage

The problem isn't that no coders are/were available. I am a professional programmer with over 10 years programming exp; not as a hobby but for a living for the leading Linux distribution. I have been here since the start offering to help.

The problem I see, is your trying to reinvent the wheel and you don't have the structure needed to make it better.

I offered up a considerable amount of code that would have gotten you started. Did it have all the stuff you wanted? No, but it worked and it cut down on the spam a user would see in his inbox. It didn't report anything, yet...but it worked and it stopped most spam.

If you can program, then write the program and offer it up. Quit whining and belly aching, produce some code in whatever language.

not reinventing the wheel

If something was already out there that did what we're trying to do, I haven't seen it (or I'd be using it, not kicking around this forum). Unfortunately, this is not a trivial problem to tackle.

knayil, if you have code to offer up, please spend a few minutes documenting what it does (and how), and start a thread in the forum. I'm sure people (including me, when I check in) will have plenty of questions for you and suggestions -- if you have time to work on this -- and we can move along in at least one area.

If there were a smallish area that I could develop a proof-of-concept in, I could probably put some time into that. It wouldn't be C++ (I've been writing mostly Java since it came out, so that's where I'm fast), but a proof of concept isn't the final implementation anyway, and once the idea is proven it's easier to get people going.

I will dig around the site a bit more to see where we are with high-level design.
