Site statistics

I've setup awstats to update every hour on the hour with new statistics for the webpages.

You'll see trends start to form as we gather more statistical info. It's amazing how popular everything is considering that this project is only 6 days old.

I gotta say...

I'm a little freaked out that your top visitors' IP addresses are published for the world (and potential hackers) to see. You may want to consider turning that report off because it's not providing any benefit to your visitors and it's putting your most active members at unnecessary risk.
Note to self: Until fixed, cut back on visits to beta.okopipi.org so as to stay out of spotlight ;)

Ok

i've removed it. It'll be removed after the next update.

I don't mean to be critical

Sorry, I may have seemed a little too harsh in my last post. But you've seen what these spammers will do to discourage people from participating in programs designed to shut them down. I'm convinced they will stop at nothing. I'm just looking out for the community. :)

No worries

I didn't take any offense to that post. You did have a good point there. Anyways, the real information comes out of my use of phpmyvisites. It's a great free analytics package, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who needs to pull analytics info from pages, or simply wants more than a simple hit counter.

Go for it Nathan

Hey Nathan, ignore the doom mongers. Just go for it old son and we'll all back you. I for one would pay cash to silence the evil bastards. I am sure that many will feel the same and will stand up and be counted when needed. Off load the skeptics, we don't need them.. No doubt they'll still be happy to reap the benefits of everyone elses efforts and expenses though.

Just an FYI

I would not want my IP exposed to spammers either! Glad that you removed it :)
For the record I like to stay as safe as possible online and I ultra detest spam which is why I take a number of precautions to avoid it.

I think if we were to get more hosting companies and ISP's involved in blocking spam at the server end - the game plan would be far more effective then "attacking" spammers.

The last thing we want to do is attack

We don't want to be accused of attacking any website. The network will have a very sophisticated throttling mechanism built into it to take into consideration the health of the webserver. The last thing that we want to be accused of doing is attacking the website.

And what we're doing is simply automating the opt-out procedure for individuals, as is permitted under the CAN-SPAM act.

That's a good idea when it comes to getting the hosting companies and ISPs involved. Maybe we can create a registry of spam-unfriendly hosting companies and ISPs with a decent way of reporting spam, helping to drive business to those against spam.

Doom mongers?

There's "doom mongering", and then there's sensible planning. It's just plain common sense to try to predict the most obvious and likely spammer tactics and then pre-counter them. Haven't you ever heard of "Business Continuity Planning?" :)

How now brown Frog !

"Haven't you ever heard of "Business Continuity Planning?" :)

No. Then I'm not American either. It's probably an Americanism for Doom Mongering, or alternatively, if it goes wrong cover your backside. Do you mean "plan ahead"? Lighten up and speak plain English. (I'm on your side cousin). I say tomahhhto, you say tomayyyto, so to speak. Tee Hee!!!!!!!

Affraid

Popularity is good but I'm affraid of the DDoSes that the project may attract (and the chance of it will increase together with popularity). :(

Tell me about it

I'm hosting this on my account, and will have to pay for every GB over the quota, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. With that in mind, we are designing the software's infrastructure to be resistent against DDOS attacks.

Concern:

This would be a particularly vulnerable time for you to come under attack personally. While things are at a relatively developmental stage, I mean; the phrase "nip it in the bud" comes to mind. Do you have a contingency plan in case any of the asswipes are reading DIGG as well?

It might not be a bad plan to have a "DR Plan" for your hosting, is what I'm getting at; someone with a fat pipe and a sync'ed copy ready for you to redirect the domain to if you get really hammered badly. An attack on your bandwidth - if I understand the situation correctly - would also be an attack directly on your wallet. And at this stage of the game that could cripple your launch before it gets off the ground; not good, not good at all.

We've got some backups in place

I've got a few backup options in place. Plus I've got several offers, all to the way of dedicated servers on 100mbit pipes. I'm just wary of that, as I'm sure you can understand, because anyone could be a potential spammer.

Dedicated servers you can control and you won't end up pissing off your hosting company if you are on a shared server. What would it take to get ISP's and hosting companies involved to where they would block spam at their servers? Perhaps compiling a list and sending out some feeler emails to see how they respond?

Curious.

What if you lost an important email?

Even dspam can be wrong.

/. is running the story

Now that slashdot has let the cat out of the bag (how I got here), I imagine that's more of a reality with every passing moment. I'm sure you've already thought about that though. I hope.

Slashdot...

...is also how I arrived here. Too bad that publicity can also have negative effects. Let's hope they don't perceive us as a threat.
Possible recruitment avenue: Can we send an email to all the bluefrog subscribers telling them about the new venture?

That would probably have to come from Blue Security as their members might get a bit upset over having their addys given out without their permission.
